Setting: A Catholic high school in Southern California suburbs.

Setup: a broken highly troubled alcoholic former star high school basketball player given the opportunity to coach at his alma mater. The team hasn’t won since he left.

Rising action: Ex wife informs him that she has met someone. A game against a powerhouse lead by a douchebag coach. Tries to instill toughness. Decides to drive away from the bar for the first time.

Inciting incident: Trying a new defensive scheme and a stricter discipline rules for players. First win on the final shot. Starts to build personal bond with the players. Turning the best player to become a more aggressive vocal leader. A more committed center.

A defensive minded team starts to win games.

Attending a birthday party with ex revels how they had a son died of cancer. Adds a further meaning to the film title.

Gets fouled out in the second to last most important games due to loss of temper. Another reveal: turned down full ride to Kansas just to send a message to his father.

Another father: confronts the best player’s father. Father doesn’t want his son to rely on sports for his future based on his personal failure.

Climax: Last playoff chance with the earlier powerhouse team. Plays small ball with focus on defense and hustle. Last set play for the best player for the win. Swish and the win.

Falling action: a call from his ex. Their friend Miguel’s son is in the hospital. A hospital floor with bold children. Miguel’s wife is hysteric in distance. He has to walk away to his comfort. Reverts back to his glass of bear at the bar. Once again Doc carries him up to his home. Sleeps past team practice.

A visit from the head priest. Being pushed out due to alcohol issue. A drunk driving accident with a woman into a parked car but drives away. Walks into a wrong house and falls down the stairs during an altercation with the homeowner.

Resolution: A session with a psychiatrist about the spiral since his son. A frank conversation with his ex and genuinely apologizes.

The playoff game. Team’s growth. Father’s support.
